I was able to do a chkdsk /f and chkdsk /r after switching my computer to boot in safemode. The results came back clean so I guess it is a software problem. I'm getting a copy of windows 7 soon so I'll try the install soon.

Probably not necessary, especially if you're only using it for movies and media and such. If you play any games on it, it may be a good idea. But then again, a cooler is never a bad idea. I'd recommend getting one even if you don't need...
