i've never seen an official reply to this issue, and yes it does suck =(
well, if you take out your battery, disconnect from ac and hold down your power button for 10 mins it will reset everything to stock settings, this is what i have just done along w/ a reformat, warranties more important to me than cooler...

i have the x800 and i have a 85 xxxx serial number and i got it straight from pctorque like this so i'm assuming i have the plate.
i've heard stories of this laptop getting 1 hour playing dvds, i get 25 minutes dvds off a full charge and maybe *maybe* 50 mins word processing, this is with all settings set to optimum battery life =/
i've seen the z71v being sold barebones at places (without processor and ram, you put them in yourself) so you must be able to upgrade the processor.

what are your guys id;e vga temps? i know we cant change em so i didnt pooch em but mines sitting here @ r:79C, L:75C with no fan movement, which seems kinda high to me?
