Looks like there is only a choice between 4 cell and 8 cell for the X61/X41 series. An 8 cell will be a little less than double the life. On my T61 I get around 2.5 hours with the 8 cell doing normal work (I have a dedicated graphics...
The 4 cell batteries should not extend out. If you upgrade to the 6 or 8 cell battery it will extend out. Depends on if you want more battery life or not. I got an 8 cell on my T61 that sticks out the back, but I never even notice it.
