it still wont work. i have windows 7 on partition and xp on partition 2. i am going to try your gparted method and see if isolating the installs from seeing one another and flagging them both as bootable as you suggest works. no doubt...

yes i noticed in ATA mode in the BIOS XP boots fine, but as soon as I switch to AHCI it didn't. On Vista I needed to install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager I think it's called (during the setup) for it to install.
