I had this issue with my Area 51 laptop also with Nvidia card (9800gt). There are millions of forums out there for this problem and no clear solution. In my case it was defective video card. 280M is based on same G92b core as 9800M.
Make sure "hybrid graphics" and "integrated graphics" are disabled in BIOS graphics settings. Also use dell drivers on their support site, instead of some shady stuff online.
NWGuru, let's hear about that very special laptop you mentioned earlier.. is it worth skipping 5870s and waiting for that instead?
haha just being realistic
I give it 10% chance that everything works flawlessly
yea, I'm also in the market for a new gaming laptop. My m15x is getting old. I'd like to last till sandy bridge, but I'm definitely tempted to buy dual 5870s.. Another thing that worries me is stuff like "Onlive" aka cloud...
Sounds like you have some inside info.. anything specific?
I think it's not coming out for current R2 anymore, as alienware would have done it already. My guess is, we'll see R3 in June for E3. We might even see a completely new m17x and then another refresh when 940xm comes out in Q3.

Very disappointing. Dell/Alienware had plenty of time to play around with i7 and dual GPUs, so you would think all issues would be wrinkled out by now. It will take these corporate thieves forever to resolve this, which pushes dual 5870s...
