Thanks for the advice - don't want to stick with vista though as it's an awful OS & even with ready boost the laptop struggles. (Plus there's the expense part) I'll go look at Acer support. Thanks again

I have absolutely no idea how to update the bios. Wish I'd never gotten it, it's been nothing but bother!

It goes right to the very end mate, then goes to the black screen on the final reboot. Very strange. Seems my laptop came set up with the HD partitioned. Could that be the reason for the fail?

That's all it says - install failed. It's OEM.
