problem fixed, i found the solution on youtube of all places! apparently there is a bug with the NVIDIA 8600M GT, whereby flickering will occur with all relatively new drivers, regardless of OS. This is caused by NVIDIA Powermizer...

thanks, but unfortunately the Aspire 5920 doesn't seem to be supported. when i ran Driver Max it told me that quite a few drivers were out of date. I think i'll try to update them all and see...
