i hook mine up to my 40" sony 1080i What i did is just go into the nvidia control panel for video and set it up to single display, select the tv. i didn't use the FN/F8 feature.

another option is buying an external Enclosure DVD drive, so you can wire that via USB or FW.

it's totally obvious you don't like or enjoy your MBP, just ebay it and you'll get 1200-1300 bucks (after fee's and shipping maybe 1100+) and get a windows laptop.
