The simple answer: As many as you need. The complicated answer: Depending on what drivers, applications, utilties you have installed, the number could be anything.
Yes, though a good hub/switch and a couple of network cables could do the same thing. But an external hard drive should have no problems, especially if both machines are XP-based.

I believe IBM has a point of presence in pretty much every state due to their consulting and services division. That's probably why they charge tax for everybody.
