I ended up buying a new hard drive. That fixed everything. My son-in-law installed it and said that Toshiba uses cheap hard drives. He put in a Western Digital.
No I didn't have a power failure. the recovery disc just stopped and rebooted right in the middle of the recovery. By using another disc that will boot off of the CD, I am able to view all the files on my hard drive. So that means...
