You can resize your hdd quite simply upto 50% using windows disk manager then install windows 8 to unallocated space. How did you make the switch from xp to 7 was it a new install or upgrade? If new install then you most likely you don't...

I also have a laptop with broken screen & altho the Fn combination keys are high-lighted in blue as well as the monitor key they don't work as a combination (atleast my laptop) I use the monitor key alone to toggle to external monitor.

Booting from usb options are listed under hdd's not usb devices. Go into select hdd's it will expand showing the usb device just move the device up.
