Sounds like the power plug issue. Either the plug is broken... the pins on the side loosen up after some time, or bad solder point. In order to check that you would have to take out the motherboard completely. Lots of screws.
Unless you have a different coating on yours, I do not believe that heat would be the cause of the paint peeling off. If you are able to keep your hand on those parts that are hot then that is not the cause for it.
