To my knowledge that was fixed before the ISOs were officially released, in fact that was exactly WHY the ISOs were actually delayed is they wanted to fix that bug. You have experience that says otherwise?
Don't plug it in while power is going to the laptop, IDE(Going off memory I believe that one is) does not handle that well, and it is conceivable you could damage something.

Hmm strange, usually getting packages in Ubuntu isn't really a problem, coming from someone that helps with support for Ardour, and often has to point people to different sources for packages to install.
