I just ordered a Battalion myself and I plan on installing Mandrake 10.1 on it too. It's going to be a few days (10-15 at least... :-( ) but I'll get back to you once I have played with it a little. There are some threads on this...

So you do get to a prompt then? Or does it not boot at all?

Disabling the network service to see if you can get past that message? Perhaps it's a problem with the nic driver or something along those lines. It'd at least let you elminiate that as a problem.
