The fans are loud because they're spinning fast. They are trying to remove the heat from your laptop. If you use a program to "lower the volume", you're gonna fry your laptop. Clean the fans!

Just a question for the more knowledgable. Do these drives use one laser for both DVD and CD reading/writing? Did you try a DVD based lense cleaner? It sounds like you wrote this drive off pretty quick.
