Can you plug in an external monitor and see if it looked messed up on that screen too? Have you set your color depth to 32 bit in the display properties control panel?

You are using the little video plug dongle and plugging svideo into that right? Or are you doing svideo right into the back of the laptop?

I've had 3 different power adapters for my XPS, and the A00 version I had gave me the option of pressing F1 to shutdown whenever I'd try to power up. All the A01's I've had worked fine. Apparently its more common than I thought.

I posted thebenchmark results in the other thread. The 5400 sucks ass, but hey, its a laptop and you really shouldnt be booting into windows that often anyway. If you can spare some cash the 7200 is worth it.
