Well you did everything I'd have done. If the heatsink is dust free now and the fan is still on high the temperature sensor has probably gone bad. How or if you fix that would depend on how much it bothers you I guess.
I have never been able to use anything except for the original drivers with my 8890. Although I gave up trying newer drivers about a year ago. It has yet to be a problem for me though, everything I need to work (games) always does.
I just bought a Medusa 5.1 headset and this post helped a ton with setting them up. Aussie, you are the man! =)

75C is way way too hot. Anytime mine starts to creep over 60C under full load I know it's time to pull the heatsink and clear out dust and pet hair. Mine starts to do bad things when the temps get to 64-65C.
Yeah, I'm not really sure either. I'd email tech support and see if they can suggest options.
