On the last two laptops I've had, a clean install of XP using the default "Windows XP" theme yields abnormally large (bold) minimize, maximize, and close buttons on windows. I've used different XP Pro disks and the same thing...
I have SR-60's and I love them. The best 70 bucks I've spent in a long time. If you're really that concerned, I'd go to a hi-fi shop and try them out. E-mail Grado, maybe there's a retailer near you.

nice color.
bt = bluetooth (if i'm wrong, someone please step in here)
Install the latest Synaptics drivers.
If you boot from the CD-ROM, you can format it in the setup wizard. Right?
If you need to recover files before your restore, use Knoppix!
Might sound dumb, but you sure it's not the MP3's? Poor encoding can cause weird sounds. Try playing an audio CD and see if the same thing happens. That will rule out your headphones. Update drivers maybe. My Z70V sounds excellent...
I'll echo that. Install the latest synaptics drivers. There are all sort of exta taps and gestures you can assign.
