I can hear the fans kick in on mine when it starts getting hot while gaming. Also some third party management software, even some Nvidia stuff I found would casue the fans to not work properly. Sometimes a clean install of Windows is the best medicine. Keep everything stock with Dell aproved drivers and see how it goes. I think Microsoft should work with Vista for a few more years before releasing a new O/S. I mean what is the point of a new O/S unless theres a major hardware change that requires it. All its going to do is make current PC software incompatable. Most people dont even know how to run Vista let alone XP. Doesnt make sense to me other than greed.
I did a search on Youtube and some brit has a couple videos on how to upgrade the video card. It actaully comes apart very simular to the 1710. THere is a hidden screw. Also you need to push upwards on the keyboard to remove. Overall its a pretty simple job.
It was idleing at 77 to 80C and would run 90+ while gaming. Some games would become unplayable in SLI as the cards would overheat.
After cleaning the cards idles at 65C, I have not gamed with them yet.
I found out why my 8800s were running hot. Ater I removed the card and removed the fans I found a WALL of DUST built up between the fan and heatsink. You couldnt see it from the outside at all. I know I have previously blown air through the heatsing but for some reason it didnt clear it out. I should have taken a picture because it looked like a blanket or air filter sandwiched between their. No wonder it would run so hot. Just a eads up for anyone with a 1730. You cannot...
