If you map a network drive to the shared folder you can then set a different username and password then your system user/pass that it will automatically use for connecting to that network share. It works great! Martian
Another vote for Ubuntu as a good starter distribution. If you really want to get under the hood of Linux (and get you hands dirty) then there is no better choice then Gentoo. The Gentoo install is only rivaled in difficulty by Linux...
