it all depends, there is you answer. i had a 5000e for 5 years, but certain parts fell and broke on it constantly. it still worked, but build sucked, so ended up sitting on the desk next to my desktop (dimensions 4100). was parting it...
you are correct, it depends on the location of the chip on the ram module i suspect. also, in my case, i have 2GB ram so i figure there wasn't a demand to use the other 1gb, so although the system didn't crash, it was very confused...
