My girlfriend's Asus Z71A (15.4") will get 5.5 hours on a single 8-cell. With the extra optical-bay battery I imagine it'd hit the 9 hour mark. They are out there.

The Turions you mention are all faster, by quite a lot, than the P4 2.4 GHz.

If you're really concerned about leaving a hard drive spinning all night, Linux can help you. I forget exactly how to do it (hdparm -something), but you can tell a Linux machine to cache all HD writes in RAM, and only dump them to disk...

Consider that we all got screwed over by Intel. Their marketing people forced a bunch of very bright engineers to continue working on Netburst. If they'd been doing something useful during that time...
