I've never seen that warning from a powered hub. How much power does the hub supply? How many devices do you have plugged in? What devices do you have plugged in?? If you unplug one device, do you still get the same message?

Every HDD i've heard ticking differently that it always has has eventually gone bad. I've seen them take 5 min or 2 months to go bad.

sounds like a mobo issue to me. Since the drive works via usb conversion, but hangs when in the laptop, I guess the hardware reader is the problem....new mobo probably.

I clean installed xp sp2 and I don't have this problem. Did you install your graphics drivers specifically? Thats where I would look first. You might want to flash to the A01 bios also. You might try uninstalling your display...
