I too own the D810 and it's one of the quietest laptops out there... Even the OEM HDD that came with it doesn't make any noises.

UPDATE: I have received the D810 from Dell Sept 8, 2005 and I'm very satisfied with it. I upgraded the RAM to 2x512MB DDR2 and the lappy is flyin'. I feel that it's a little on the heavier side but I don't plan to be too moblie with this...
I would definitely get the D810 (IMO)... better build (contruction wise with firm casing), better graphics processor (X600), better warranty (Business Class)
