I think you will be fine. Make sure that the plug is wired the same, ie tip positive or negative. It should be marked near the power connection on both laptops. Good luck. Use my advice at your own risk.

My first guess would be that your xfconfig is hosed. I don't know ubuntu so the filename may very and its location. I would suggest that you do some googling to see what linux on laptops or similar has to say. Good luck.
