The crinkly paper description of the screen makes it sound like the LCD itself..you just might be able to find a non working machine with good lcd on Ebay for cheap
Once you get it going, if you have hibernate or sleep activated...turn them off...cause nothing but grief..if you want to shut the laptop down..dont do it by closing the lid..take an extra second and power down(shut down) via the Start...
Once you make sure it is cleaned really well as mentioned above...unplug it...remove the battery...hold the power button down for a min...replace battery, replace a/c power and try booting it up again...
