Are you using your laptop on a soft surface or on a desk..I f you are blocking the fan vents, that would be causing the heat problem..Is the Operating system as it came from the factory, or did you reload

When you put the thermal paste on, follow the directions..a case of too much is no good...just a very tiny dab and spread about...thoroughly clean those fins and the fan blades before reassembly..can of compressed air is best for that
Yeah, it makes a big difference when using these laptops that they are on a solid surface so as to not obstruct the vents...that causes serious overheating..along with dust/hairbuildup
