Just put away (both still work) IBM Thinkpad 390 2626 w/ Puppy Linux and a Toshiba Sat 1400(with another distro,,damned if I can remember what was on it now)..both worked well..it was the operator (me) that was having some problems...
Even with only being able to use 2GB or less of memory, they would make excellent Linux boxes....
Just a thought, maybe the drive you are using is toasting...giving up the ghost..maybe check the drive for problems
I have had this model for a few months and it probably meets all your component demands..I am not a gamer but thought I would pass it on for a suggestion of something in this line possibly a newer...
Curious why you updated the driver..were you experiencing problems...if not, consider a system restore back to the day before you updated the driver
I wonder if a hard reset may work...remove from a/c, remove battery...hold down power button for about 30 secs- 1 min...replace battery, plug in laptop then try powering up
replacing the inverter certainly wont hurt to try, and def a lot cheaper...if that doesnt work, then on to bigger and more expensive things...

It appears to be a cracked motherboard problem in the posts above..I have to ask..do all of you with this problem, close the lid all the time to turn off the laptop...or, do you power down thru Start>Shut Down...Constant closing of the...
If I am not mistaken, the K53 is an ASUS laptop not an Acer.( wrong section)..Looked for a K53A at Crucial and couldnt find that model..are you sure its not a K53TA??? Check at Crucial.com to find out what the max memory your model can...
