Yeah - another vote for VLC. Do you have the latest version of quicktime installed. I found that when I first got Quicktime 7 I couldn't smoothly play back Hi-Def H.264 files, but the latest version fixed that for me.

thats exactly what I did - everything else is compatible, theres really no difference apart from price (I got a plug adaptor from maplins, that works fine with my power supply)

You can also reflash the firmware on your disk drive to make it region free. Its a slightly technical process, but not too bad. I'll put up some links later, but I haven't got much time now.
