if you open your volume controls, do you have all the diferent speakers there for volume control (if not you may have to add them trhough properties) is anything muted or set too low?
in control panel - just go into the windows sound and audio devices, speaker settings - advanced - and you can chosse 5.1 form there - works for me.

try www.ibuypower.com they have the batallion 101 machine or somethiing like that. I have seen alot of mixed reviews about them. I have no knowlege of their computers or support. I can only say PCtorque and Sager have been great to me...
