I wouldn't worry about heat. The MBP hasn't had heat issues for awhile now (since Apple did a logic board revision). Core2Duo gives it more muscle, and the double sided burner is nice too.

Really? I just have a curiosity bump about the OS I use. Being a somewhat recent Mac convert, I am starting out trying to learn about Mac OSX, not just how to use it but what it is.

That sounds unusual. On my MBP, with Safari and Mail running I use 230.64MB of active and 120.24 of Wired. Check to see what else is running in the background using Activity Monitor.
Of course the superdrive can also double as a shuriken launcher...
I also have tried Opera, Safari and FF. The fastest browsing I got was Safari, followed by Opera than FF. For Mail I have decided OSXs Mail app works the best for me.
