I'm curious what was the file type once you could see the real one?
Ah ha I don't think you are really seeing the file extensions, more just a description, in the folder window goto Tools then folder options then the view tab and uncheck "Hide extensions for know file types" see what you have...
Dunno then I'd try googling it. Never heard of that, try renaming it to .mpeg or .mov might work. Does with some .dat files.
whats the file extension ie .vob .mov .wmv .mpeg etc etc and also are you trying to open it or import? Import is the option to use.
Belive it or not windows movie maker has one usefull feature and that is to do what you asked, Import it with that and drag the clip(s) to the timeline then save movie, you have advanced options to save in pretty much any format you like...
I've got a Videoh! one by adaptec USB though, and I wouldn't recomend it either its crap theres much better ones out there.
