In their price range, I think the e-machines 6800 series is unbeatable. I bought one to hold me over till I could get a 'real' notebook, and now find myself unwilling to fork over $3-4k for something marginally, MARGINALLY! better.
If people listened to people who said "why go there" history would be quite a bit different.
I have a 'very busy man' bag from crumpler, and I carry TWO laptops around in it, lol. I've been complimented on it numerous times on the subway in nyc.

That popup probably started appearing after you get the windows wpa/wi-fi hotfix from windowsupdate. had to update drivers on 2 laptops after that hotfix 'fixed' them.
Pair of refurbed sennheiser HD525s blow away any 'pc' speakers. Oh, btw, my $1200---after rebates---e-machines 6805 has NO dead or stuck pixels. Neener! Neener! I'm waiting to see how many 8790's get melted in the first 3 months...
There are a number of non-FPS games that can use that extra memory without having to push around a billion polys at 60fps, fyi. Listening to the benchmark weenies, you'd think the only game genre in existance was FPS.
