You can certainly install a new copy of XP from a regular Microsoft CD. You will probably want to add Toshiba utilities, power management, etc, but if it is a CD that didn't come with the machine, you will need to use the COA number...
If the problem started after you worked on the jack, it sounds like a cable may not be well seated.
The only way I know to test buttons would be to open the machine, remove the cables and put a meter across the contacts. Have you recently upgraded to wmp version 10? You might try changing the buttons to go to whatever other choice...
One more suggestion: I assume you have a canadian model; go to www.toshiba.ca and download and reinstall the Toshiba Controls for your machine.

I think all the MBs have A5A000160010. Is there a P000XXXX number also?
To me, it sounds like the new MB may be bad. What are the part numbers on the MBs? They should look like P000352310, or something like that. Did the new board come with a CPU or did you use the old one?
