I didn't suggest diy. Wanting to reuse laptop parts in a desktop implies not much experience taking laptops apart.
The parts are not usable in a desktop, except the HDD and you would still need an adapter. If it is the jack in the back, it can be replaced by any Toshiba repair place.
Yes. It will work. Set the jumper to force it to be master if it is pre-set for cable-select.
What about the volume knob on the outside? On that model, it's on the right side right near the front.
Just to be sure, try an external monitor, but it sounds like the LCD panel is sick.
Flickering usually means the refresh rate is too low. What is the refresh rate set for the external monitor? The refresh rate should be set as high as the monitor will support.
If it has slowed down, look at the task manager to see what's running. Also, look in the event log. Sometimes there are disk errors causing many retries just before a disk fails.
In most cases, a bad graphics chip would affect both the internal and the exyternal display. When you replaced the LCD, was there a separate backlight? (I don't have a manual for that model.) What about the video cable? Try reseating...
I think that plugging and unplugging is OK. The battery does best if you don't leave it plugged in and turned off.
