Try the Averatec AV3220H1 from Newegg.com for $754. It's the cheapest laptop you can buy in the under 5lb category.
My desktop win2K system used to be on a FAT32 partition (because it was faster on the boot) and it really flew...then I installed SP4 and noticed some real slowdowns when booting. Switched to NTFS after that point when I striped my drives.
Say, isn't DDR3 already being used in high-end consumer graphics cards already?
I normally wouldn't recommend Averatec, but since you only wanted web surfing and DVD-watching, you can get the 12" 32xx series for about $800. Go take a look at them first if you want to buy one, I've heard the screens are dim.

Cheapest barebone I've seen out there is the Aopen 1555AL for $399.
Try the Dell Inspiron 9300 as an alternative to the XPS2, saves close to the $1000 off the price and shaves off a pound of weight...don't forget to get the Geforce 6800 go for it.
