This happens to me too. My sound will be fine, then it'll just stop working. Usually doing a quick standby->resume will kick it back into working order.

Have you tried playing this game you speak of? Chances are that game will play fine, if you use the most recent drivers for your card, because assuming the makers are sane, they won't limit themselves to the tiny market of DX9 video...
