Windows XP will run on any drive letter. If the laptop can boot from USB, then you'll be able to boot off of the hard drive. I'm not sure if Windows installer can read a USB hard drive though.

To use arctic silver, you'd ahve to almost completely dissasemble your computer. Arctic silver goes between the CPU and the heatsink, it helps conduct heat between the two, it's nothing you need to worry about.
