If you plan to be doing photo editing, you'd want a high screen resolution. There aren't a lot of those with dedicated graphic at your price point, but there are a few like this Sony (quad-core processor, low-end dedicated video card)...
Nvidia all the way. If you look at Notebook Check's benchmark scores and game performance list, the 520M has Intel graphics beat every time.
You'd have to contact Gateway with proof that the computer is yours.
What version of Windows do you have? I presume it's Windows 7, but is it Basic or Home Premium? If it's Basic, you won't be able to change the background through Windows, but Asus should provide a utility with the same functionality.
Right-click anywhere on the screen, select "Personalize" in the menu that appears, and then choose your theme from there.
Could be. Try using a different driver ans see if the problem goes away.
If you're seeing problems that have been duplicated on other machines using the same graphics card, I'd see if you can get the card replaced.
Asus has been late with product launches this year. They have some market segments that still haven't been refreshed to Sandy Bridge or Llano.
Yes, the Samsung would likely have better build quality.
