buying a ibook for amazon is very safe, the 1 year warranty is provided by apple regardless from were you buy it from, you many even buy applecare (apples 3 year warranty) within the first year of purchase of the ibook even if you did...
i would try going to a mac repair center and see if they can order in the part for you or try finding some online shop that sells the part. i have seen a few but never taken a note of their names.

the graphic chip in the 15 and 17 inch powerbook is better, but OS speeds will be the same providing you have 16 mb or vram mac os x will run fine with the effects and stuff.
