I'm having this same problem on a 4780, and the list of 'valid modes' in the ATI driver settings does not include one for 1440x900 at anything > 60hz. Anyone ?

Yeah it's not like I'm going to buy a gateway or anything. The noise on the second laptop turned out to be nothing (here's hoping). For me it's totally worth it to jump through a few hoops for these machines.
