I've always used Intel cores, and they haven't let me down yet. That doesn't mean I won't buy an AMD in the future, just that for when I've been in the market, Intel has been superior or equal to the products AMD has released at the time.

You might also look at the Sony S series. They have good specs, very powerful notebooks, and have a 14" screen so they are very portable.
As far as the hard drive question goes, it all depends on what you consider a good example...
