I upgraded my WinDVD to the Platinum version and it has given me no trouble whatsoever. Now, if only the DVD's you can't click to select a function would let you.

You can also alter it a few shades by using Fn + F9 to darken, Fn + F10 to lighten. It's default is at the dark end. I'm not sure, but this way may have the hardware reduce power to the LCD and save power.
A while back, I looked at ATI's site and saw something that suggests that they are not the same chip. Desktop GPU uses .15 micron technology, but Mobility GPU uses .13 micron technology. Sounds like a different chip to me!
