yes, definatly running off the HD. The spinning from the DVD drive also adds heat which makes batterly life low too.

how many processes are running after you start up w/o opening anything? Also, which antivirus program do you use? You may also want to consider upgrading some drivers - video/chipset etc

mabye liquid cooling? or add another fan? The Pentiums run quite hot so that is normal. Do you have a temp to share with us?

if all else fails, run dos before windows starts. try acessing your drive through there, and running whatever file you are looking for.
