I bought 2 5150 adapters from ebay for use with my XPSgen2/7800GTX (cheers again Bal`thzar)
They are both revA00 and have behaved perfectly.
Which is more than I can say for my revA02, far too often the LED on the adapter goes out and...
If your surround sound setup doesn't have a digital input, ie no onboard decoding, then I think Qwert1515's suggestion for a USB soundcard is your most economical solution.

Creative do make a standalone decoder, the DDTS-100 for approx $150 if that helps.
I know the adapter works perfectly into my Videologic Digitheatre Platinum which has coax and optical inputs
Don't have M1710, have XPS2 but I think the adapter is the same, it looks like this

With the intel wifi card it was pot luck whether the wifi light stayed on or not.
With the Atheros card the wifi light shows network activity in the same way that the led in the ethernet connector does.
I personally like this activity...
