Just to make sure my thinking is correct here, the motherboard/chipset needs to be 915 (i.e. not a laptop that can only support the 855 chipset)?
Could one expect to have better battery life after changing to an 855 chip?
Yes, it can be done. Yes, it will void the warrenty.
You order all the parts you need from Sony, but it costs more than if you speced the laptop with the Bluetooth option. You can find a thread about it here: http://www.talkvaio.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=87
Indeed. It's a shame too. I would have ordered one of the 4xx series notebooks from Japan if the battery life wasn't so bad.
Back on topic, Nintek (http://www.nintek.com.au/) said they can get the X50 in for me for $AUS3125 shipped. They offer great deals to us Overclockers AU (http://www.overclockers.com.au/) members. That's about 2,364.58 USD using XE (http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi). I'm fairly sure it comes with 1 year international and 3 years domestic warrenty.
I love the Sony S series. It's the laptop I am looking at getting for myself (considering I can't find a WSXGA screen for the X50 either).
There's a s270 with 2.0ghz 1gig ram and 80gig hdd with 2 years warrenty (with their current promotion) in the refurb section of the Sony site for 2000 ex. tax. I have seen one for under 1600 with 2ghz and 1gig ram. You will need a CC to buy it though.
I tried to buy one off their site, but they don't accept international credit...
I'm forever a WS fan. I don't think I could get another 4:3 ratio TV or laptop.
Here is the full Australian spec model:
PROCESSOR: Intel Pentium M(Dothan T750 - 1.86 GHz) (FSB 533MHz);
Intel Centrino; (Intel Mobile Technology, Pentium M + Wireless LAN)
CACHE: Dothan 2MB; CHIPSET: Intel 915PM + ICH6M
BIOS:8 Mbit, Flash upgradable; THERMAL DESIGN PERFORMANCE:40W TDP
MEMORY: 512MB DDR2 SODIMM Upgradeable to Max.2GB; SOCKETS: 2-slot...
The HK model should come with 1 year international warrenty. Some countries only get domestic one year, others international. For some reason we (Australian models) get 1 year international and 3 domestic.
If you really want the WSXGA screen, I would possibly create multiple PayPal accounts and transfer money between them until you can withdrawl all the cash you have saved there. Then you can direct deposit it to Dynamism for the UK model.
