Just a quick update to my post above (#20)... Using the Sony drive, I have tried Sony DVD+R 8X media, it maxed out at 6.35X just like TDK DVD-R 8X medias. I have also tried Verbatim DVD-R 16X. It was pathetic! It maxed at 2.2X which is...
If this feature is supposed to prevent "unauthorized" copies from getting updates, then it's not working. Just to see if it can be done, I have successfully installed XP MCE 2005 to my ancient Dell Latitude CPx (PIII500mhz)...

I have tried both the Sony and NEC in my XPS2. I have flashed both with the latest firmware from Dell. My informal testing/comparison of burning times of two different 8X DVD-R media brands (Fujifilm and TDK) is inconclusive. Sony seems...
My i6000D with X300/64MB can run at 400 core, 275 mem. I think it scored around 1400 3dMark05 at that speed. Use ATITOOL to find you max speed then scale it back a little bit (10mhz) for a cushion of safety.
I just got a Kensington Contour Pro 17". I like it. It's quite comfortable to carry. Lots of compartments for your accessories. It comes with a padded notebook sleeve if you don't feel like taking the whole case.
I haven't really tried it on a non-Dell system. I have a feeling that it probably won't work as is. But just like you said, it can probably be hacked.
