You want to be looking for mini pci express N cards. Check ebay for the intel wireless N notebook cards.
If your router doesn't support N, why bother getting a new card?
It might need a new jack socket. Just be sure to test your power supply for the correct voltage but if your laptop powered on with the battery, I think the culprit is the connection.
