Popping? Any smell?

Sounds like bad news. Try testing your ac adapter for the correct voltage.

Maybe physically remove the drive, clean out the socket and screw back in to make sure the drive is seated properly. Hopefully it isn't the drive crapping out on you.

There might be a cap on the memory recognized by the BIOS. Did you run it with a 2 gb and 512mb at the same time? How much did it recognize?

The only difference that I have seen between the two brand pieces are the circuit board underneath it. Did you buy the emac one with the circuit board included?

It ultimately might be the end of your motherboard

When it does recognize it, does it work properly?
