I have personally installed a T7300/T7500 and the T8300 into it. Best bang for the buck would be the T8300
I would consider this laptop a more DIY notebook. Those who buy it are content with its specs-performance-price and the others buy it to personalize the specs with upgrades due to its price.
It's the case of actual and advertised hard drive space. Your 250GB hard drive only has 232GB of usable space. Actual disk space is usually 7% less than advertised.

I actually got the WUXGA and T8300 from pulls from my other Dell laptops. I'm sure you can find a screen and CPU on ebay at a reasonable price. And yes, the T7200/7400/7600 are not compatible.

Is that the slot load drive? Try the Pioneer DVR-K06, i had good experiences with that one.
Have you tried reinstalling the reader's driver?
